Double Trouble

Becca & Mandy

Having twins is a strange experiece….espescially to find out at 5 1/2 months pregnant at the ultrasound. I had tears of joy and fear about what was to come. Carrying the twins was very hard on my body. At around 7 months I went into early labor but they were too small to deliver. I was admitted to the hospital in the High Risk area next to Labor and Delivery and Nurses Station. I was trapped there staring at 4 pea soup green colored walls with no television or any entertainment. I developed Preeclampsia and was put on an IV and was not allowed food or drink for a while which is torture for a pregnant woman. I would dream of an oasis with various fruit juices, lemonade, Ice tea, watermelon and baskets of fruit. And the Magnesium Sulfate they give you makes you feel so hot as if you were in the desert!

I was not allowed to get out of bed and had a catheter. I was poked and prodded all day with needles and blood samples and bruised. They had to give me a shot of steroids for their lungs to develop in time to deliver. When they were big enough they took me off the drugs and administered Pitocin to induce labor. That basically took 3 days and then they didn’t feel like coming into the world. My parents were sent home by the Dr saying they wouldnt be here until the next day until 2:30 am when they decided to make their grand entrance. The Labor was tiring and after pushing the 1st one out I did not feel as if I would have the energy to do it all over again. The nurses quickly assured me that the 2nd one would come quick and within minutes. Well I guess after Rebecca kicked Amanda out she finally had room to herself and wanted to stay for a while…..so she took 26 minutes to appear.

They were 4 1/2 pounds and looked like little chickens coming a month premature. They went to the Special Care Nursery and I wasn’t allowed to see them for 2 days! My Dad snuck a polaroid in to take a picture of them for me. Then I was sent home with no babies until they gained enough weight to come home. Luckily, they only spent 12 days at the hospital, which I stayed every waking minute.

It was sad to see an abandoned baby there that one mother decided to leave and never came back for. She would be crying with no one to pick her up and I just wanted to pick her up so bad. The nurses were annoyed an just kept popping the pacifier into her mouth saying she was always crying. Well of course she was, her Momma was gone!

The twins slept together in the crib at first because they were so tiny. Even when they had their own cribs they always had each other and would talk to each other with their secret language. Having 2 was easier in a way because they kept each other entertained and looked out for each other. They were very good babies, thank goodness, or I would have been insane! They loved to eat everything and sleep which was perfect and they always had a friend there and they weren’t scared to sleep at night. Now having a single birth afterwards seems much more difficult and seems as if something or someone is missing.

Charlie My Little Angel

Charlie was what they call an “angel face” delivery. (And he is a little angel face too right!!) It is also called face presentation when the face is coming first and the chin isnt tucked under like usual.

Face presentation is quite rare, occurring in 1 in every 500 births. About 4% chance. It can either develop during the pregnancy, which is rare, or the baby can move into a face-first position as labor progresses, which is more usual. This sounds very scary when described, as the head is bent backwards till it is resting on the back shoulders. It appears like the baby is going to break it’s neck coming out! The top of the baby’s head will be resting (uncomfortably!) on the mother’s backbone. Labor will likely be slower since the face or nose is not an ideal canidate to dilate the cervix. Which means extra pain for you.

The back pain was extremely intense and even the pain meds just barely take the edge off. And you have no urge to push since the head was not hitting the proper nerves. When they did the internal exam to check how much I was dilated and i think i only got to 1 and 1/2 and you need 10. During the exam they went to feel the head and instead felt his nose and little mouth and he bit the Dr’s finger (not hard of course, but you know that little stinker!) She was shocked, laughed and amazed because she never felt it before.

Since St. Barnabas is also a teaching hospital, the others wanted to check it out also and at that moment I really didnt care so I said go ahead. I knew it was a rare thing and prolly cool and I woulda wanted to also, so i did. So I guess he was kinda stuck. That’s why he also had some bruises on his face (angel kisses they call them) but they went away before we left the hospital. Plus his heart rate was fluctuating very high and low, prolly cuz bigboy was stuck! They say you can still possibly deliver them…and my Dr said I could wait a few more hours to see if he moved but i said no way and he said it was prolly best for him.

After 18 hours of labor it was enough for both of us to handle. The C- section was quick and painless. Poor Dan accidentally looked over when they were sewing me up and saw a quick flash of my insides and said he never wanted to see anything like that ever again! I love blood and guts but I know I would feel weird looking at someone I love all cut open! But I basically had very little pain which is scary enough to want to do it again.

25 Random things about me….

1. I am the thumb wrestling Champion of the World….No, Universe!

2. I love to sleep, it used to be a hobby…3 kids now and I haven’t had sleep in 12 years!

3. I have driven cross country twice.

4. When I was pregnant I acquired the strange habit of putting my glass of milk in the freezer….Milk Slushee…..I still love it!

5. I am addicted to my DVR and now I cant watch commercials.

6. I had to live in the hospital for 2 months until my twins were born……Boring….and no TV!!

7. I have taken about 4 bus trips from NJ to Florida….I do not reccomend this!

8. I can’t live without my heating pad.

9. I have been attacked on the subway by Homeless psychopaths at least 3 times or more.

10. In the early 90′s I traveled around the country to “Raves” when they used to be “cool” and we all hug out with the International Djays.

11. My dad is an ex- Dead Head who went to Woodstock and has an earring. He gave up his Motorcycle after me…per my mother’s pleading.

12. I have shot a machine gun before….my favorite gun is a Glock.

13. My name was supposed to be Melissa from the Allman Brothers song but instead my mom got her way and I am a 4th generation Suzanne. The original from Hungary is Zsu Zsu/ Zsa Zsa.

14. Family Legend has it we are descended from Royalty in Hungary when my ancestor milkmaid slept with the king and got pregnant. (There is a book about this in Canadian print.)

15. I shared a room like the Brady Bunch with 3 sisters until 17.

16. I have owned a snake Damien and an Iguana Lenny and a Rottweiler/Shepard Dog named Rox…..and hermit crabs Cannonball, Anita, and Lt. Dan

17. I lived in NY between the years of 1991-1999

18. I must sleep with a body pillow…his name is Sebastian

19. My favorite Food is Cheese…and Mexican….with CHEESE!!!

20. I still play video games. (I have a Call of the Wild Big Buck Hunter arcade machine in my kitchen!)

21. I am ambidextrous…..was supposed to be a real Lefty but my Mom trained my right hand! (Old Catholic School traditions about the evil devil Left handed)…..my arms and fingers are also double jointed.

22. I suffer from Chronic pain daily because of Spinal problems and etc………..

23. I still have close friends from my childhood.

24. I used to be a tomboy growing up and beat up all the boys in the neighborhood.

25. My neighbor tried to commit suicide and set our house on fire (and kill my whole family)….and we had to relocate for 1 month.

The Case of the Overlook Monster

Hey, here is the crazy dream I had when I caught a cat nap at the hospital. ..
All these crazy kids were running around the delivery room crashing into her bed with one of those mini ride on sweepers that polish the floor. One of them was her stepson and I was telling him to stop so he wouldnt break something and get into trouble. Then I look over at the shelf and there are greasy fried green pepper strips and onions all over the shelf and window sill. Don’t ask me what the signifigance of that was! Then all these people were coming in like it was a waiting room for other sick kids with runny noses coughing and sneezing everywhere. All of the sudden there was a loud crash and everyone jumped. The loud crash was accompanied by frightening screams of terror coming from outside the door in the hallway. We peaked out quickly to see a blurr of something huge, hairy and menacing carrying people away breaking them in half while they screamed in agony! We baracaded the door, luckily with that big sweeper machine, as we heard it coming closer and heard screams “Help, Help, No No…it hurts so bad! God Help me!” with blood curdling screams!
That is when I was jolted awake and for a few seconds I actually beleived it was real because I was still hearing the screams from outside the door….until reality hit me….I am still in the Maternity Ward and these screams were obviously coming from a poor woman in labor! I guess these sounds were coming into my already demented dream! And I sat up and me & Diana looked at each other in fear. Im sure she was scared about the onset of active labor and what it was really going to feel like….and I was scared of a big hairy green monster, haha.
Later on the nurse told her it was the lady’s 4th child and she made it just in time to the hospital and had no time for any pain meds and the baby popped right out. So the case of the Overlook Monster was solved……or was it? hmmmmm.
